Worried

Hi so I had an mri scan and got the results back.

Everything looked ok but something has flagged up at the top of my vagina they said. It’s about 1cm. They said they aren’t worried and would usually leave it if it wasn’t for my history.

They have referred me to a gynecologist at the normal hospital tomorrow to have it looked at and my doctor said they will book my next appointment with them for Feb next year.

Does anyone know what this 1cm could be from? I’m so nervous the cancer is back :frowning:

Thanks xx

Hi Niamh

We attend the same hospital and from my experience with them if they had concerns that this area was suspicious for cancer they would schedule an EAU/Biopsy or repeat scan and  sounds like they are next seeing you in Feb under rountine follow up timescales. I wonder as they have arranged for you to see a regular gynae if they suspect it's scar tissue or a non-cancerous area to be checked out.

i would call the specialist nurse and ask her to explain what they think the area is or the consultants secretary as it's a long time to wait if you are worried about it.

I had an area of concern for cancer on many of my scans and finally on my lasest two got NED, the lastest of which was just recently and im also scheduled for my next follow up like you for Feb. When they had worries it was cancer the next follow up and repeat scans where much closer together. Good luck and I hope you get some answers to put your mind at rest (Scar tissue I believe post radiation causes a lot of us stress on scans) xx

Sorry just read that your gynae appointment is tomorrow, hopefully this will reassure you and good luck xx

Thank you for you quick reply :)

Yes your right my appointment is tomorrow. I've been told it might even be gone by then but because the MRI scan picks up everything it's better to just get it checked out. Fingers crossed it's nothing!

xx

That does sound very positive as I know they investigate anything themselves that they are worried about, I can totally understand your worry though, I'm just the same it's all such a stress isn't it. Would be great if it's gone by tomorrow and hope to hear back good news xx

So just a quick update...

the doctor had a feel and a look and said he couldn't feel or see anything but he's going to put me to sleep to have a good look round and take any biopsy's if needed.

had my pre op today so should hopefully get my op appointment in the next few weeks.

keeping positive :)

xx

Hi Niamh

Im pleased that the doctor didn't see or feel anything and sounds really positive. Despite the stress it causes it's really great for you to be getting good and thorough care and hope it will bring you reassurance xx

Hi Niamh,

I'm afraid this is par for the course during follow-up. We are under such microscopic scrutiny and our bodies are such incredibly complex organisms with constant minor changes going on the whole time. My first few follow-up exams all revealed something requiring investigation, all of it turned out to be nothing to worry about but it really is a terrifying time while there is any doubt.

Sending hugs

Be lucky :-)

Hi

so I had my op Monday and he has taken some biopsy's to be sent off for checking and I should have the results back before Xmas.

i have had a letter today which the doctor typed up after seeing me at the hospital and he said my cervix looked slightly reddened and felt a little irregular but there was no obvious tumour present and does not look particularly worrying.

im just praying these results come back clear from the biopsy now. I can't go through this again :(

Please let me know how you get on. Fingers crossed for you!

im still waiting for my results appointment. I hope it's before Xmas so I can get it out of the way. I've not had a pet scan yet just the mri scan. I presume they will send me for a pet scan soon though

xx

Are you results tomorrow morning?

I wonder why they haven't sent me for a pet scan. They did the mri and said my bowels bladder etc looked fine it's just this 1cm thing they wanted checking out. Hate all this waiting around ☹️

xx

Wishing you all the luck!

wow 2 months. I hope I get my results before Xmas. If you don't mind me asking, what's a salvage hysterectomy? Is that like pelvic exenteration?

xx

Salvage hysterectomy is the term for a rescue hysterectomy after radiation if the cancer comes back but is tiny.  It's not a pelvic exenteration and is quite a common.operation.  The exenteration is far more extensive and involves total removal of all the gynae bits including the vagina and usually the bladder and urethra, rectum and sigmoid colon. Although if it's reasonably confined to a tiny area the bladder (posterior exenteration) or bowel (anterior exenteration) may be left but that's a lot less common.

Despite how it sounds, it's doable but you are left with bags to replace lower bowel and bladder functions. Hopefully Lilypingu and yourself won't need any of these operations!

Thank you Karen. I'll have to just wait now and see what the results come back as and take it from there.

xx

Hospital just rang with my results...no cancer found. I can't believe it. I just have a lot of radio damage which will probably be there now for life but it's not back!
