Diagnosing stages

Hi all, gonna be a long one so apologies in advance. So I was referred to a gynaecologist for on and off irregular bleeding, mainly after sex which i thought was poylps. No other symptoms. They did a smear and results came back hpv with abnormal cells. Went for a colposcopy and biopsy and they told me there it was cin2 and would send out a treatment plan in 4 weeks as we wanted to go the Conservative management route so we could have more kids. Ive on baby boy whos 18 months. 2 weeks later which was 3 days ago i got a call to go in to the hospital for a chat. I knew it was going to be bad. They found a tumour which was at least 4mm in depth but the biopsy they took was at the deeper tissue so it could be larger. They are saying stage 2 based on what they seen and now ive a 4 week wait for the MRI to see how large it is and has it spread. Im absolutely besides myself with worry and cannot function at all. Has anyone been in a similar situation and it wasnt worse the stage 2. The only hope im clinging onto is that I dont have any other symptoms apart from the irregular bleeding. My other worry is i have an immune issue and need to try and boost this somehow. Its just so much to handle right now

Hi @Sarah1987

My tumour was almost 4 cm and stage 2b. A friend was 7cm and stage 2b. You can’t rely on size to stage accurately. x

Thanks for your response Lily, really appreciate it x

I meant you yourself can’t guess at a stage. Of course the scans will determine it for your team so you’ll get a treatment plan based on that. Hopefully it will not have spread. Mine hadn’t and I had no lymphnode involvement, and I had chemoradiation. x

Hi Sarah

It’s hard. Truly hard all the waiting around and wondering!

I started at stage 1b1 based on the initial biopsy. Then an internal examination/MRI had me
at stage 2 with a tumour at 7cm

Then my PET scan staged me at 3C2 but then I actually spoke with my oncologist I was actually 3C1. The nurse read the MDT report wrong!

There was only spread into 2 small lymph nodes.
Even if there had been no spread my tumour was too big to operate on even if I remained at Stage 2 so I’d be having chemorads anyhow.

I was told by my oncologist and gyno specialist not to fixate on the staging as they are just numbers and they are right.

Stage 1 is surgery
Stage 2 can be surgery and/or chemorads depending on the size of the tumour
Stage 3 is chemorads (and possibly chemotherapy depending on what your oncologist feel would be best)

I am 3C1 and by the time I had finished chemorads my tumour had shrink to 1cm so I am hopeful after internal radiation it’s been blasted into nothing but even if my 3 month scan comes back to say cancer is still there the radiation works for 6 months in total after finishing treatment. I might be waiting until May to confirm if I am cancer free

It’s a long road and in all honestly the point you are at right now is the hardest of all because you don’t know the actual stage nor do you have a plan.

Once you do you’ll find you mindset shifting.

Staging like the other girls have said is not just by the size of a tumor but also the exact location and if it has grown into other organs or lymphe nodes.

For instance a 5 mm tumor could be considered stage 1 but when it has spread to nearby lymphe nodes it automatically gets bumped up to 3c1

A 7 cm tumor without lymphe node involvement will be a stage 2.

A 3 cm tumor wich has attached to the bladder can be a stage 4a

So there is more to it then size alone. Its size, location, and had it spread or not ( locally or advanced )

My stage was 1b3 at first , the tumor was a bit over 4 cm so too big to perform surgery, and after the mri I was restaged 2b due to parametrial involvement.

I had my chemo and radiation treatment over 4 years ago and am doing really well

Hi Sarah, I’ve literally just been through the staging, tests and results. It has to be the worst few weeks ever. I had little to no symptoms apart from pelvic pain & had clear smear tests! My oncologist has said it’s about 5cm with possible lymph node involvement so stage 3C1. I was originally told 2B so had a little meltdown when it was staged higher. But, I’ve been told it means no difference at all in treatment or that they are planning for the treatment to be curative.

I completely feel where you are. Please get in touch if you need a chat! I’m due to start treatment next week & connecting with others has really helped me prepare for what’s to come. These ladies are amazing! Sending lots of hugs to you xxx

The new 3c1 staging does not change your outcome compared to 2b, this is the new figo staging. A couple of years ago you would be 2b Witt lymph node involvement, the 3 c number is not a stage higher :rose:

Thanks all of your for your responses. Its really is comforting. And yes, the waiting to be staged really is the hardest part. Im feeling a bit more positive today which is a huge relief on my body as ive been so stressed out over this. Delighted this forum is here and hopefully keep in touch with all you strong ladies xx

Anything above 1b2 is generally chemorad. Lots of us have gone through it and it’s doable.
You can do this!!
