Would really like some advise

I had my smear test on the 16th of January 2017 by the 18th I had a letter for an colposcopy appointment, while i was there the dr decided to take a large biopsy as he wasnt happy with what he could see he then told me i would more then likely be waiting 4 weeks for my results exactly 2 weeks to the day i recived a letter to say I have an appointment to see the gynogolist at the next available appointment which is the 14th February. I rang everywhere i possibly could to try find out my results and noone will tell me over the phone, I am going out of my mind!! Has anybody else had this im so scared something is wrong and i have 2 small children. I really dont know what to think!! Should i prepare myself for something bad. Sorry if this is confusing anyone but im in bits..

I'm so sorry to see this and I can really empathise with your anxiety.  I was surprised at the quick turnaround times I had recently too. I got my smear result with an appointment for colposcopy 6 days later, and was really worried that this meant something terrible.  The consultant took 2 biopsies and said that it would be 4 weeks for results, and mine came back in 2 weeks also.  Then my appointment for treatment was again really fast, within 2 weeks.  Again, I thought the worst, but it wasn't.  it was CIN3 and I was really pleased for the quick turnaround.  Still distressing, but I had a LLETZ yesterday and am feeling fabulous to think the abnormalities are now likely all gone.

Have you had your results from your initial smear test?  That should give you an indication of what to expect.

Different NHS Trusts might deal with results slightly differently.  I'm really hoping that all is well for you and whatever the results, you can be treated quickly and effectively.

Sending lots of love xxx

Ok, I know the 14th seems ages away but you will get there and then you will either be told it's all fine, or be given a plan of action to fix anything they are worried about. It is common to NOT be told anything over the phone - staff can't see you to check that you are listening or understand what is being said, and they need to be sure that we get all the necessary information even when it's good news. A quick appointment can just as easily mean they want you in quick and reassured, rather than clogging up the system - it's so hard not to make assumptions about things and we all tend to assume the worst! Waiting for results is torture, but try not to panic and stay away from Google. Come here to have a panicky rant whenever you need, or to ask any questions that pop into your head. Good luck for the 14th.

Thank you. Im so glad you recieved good news. Fingers crossed all the abnormalities are gone!! In the letter i recieved about my smear test all it said was i had some adnormal cells its didnt go into detail and when i went for the colposcopy i kept asking the dr if everything was ok n he said lets just see what your results say when they come back it was like he knew something and didnt want to tell me. I feel so stupid as this was my 1st ever smear i was 2 years late having it done i was always so scared as my sister had cervical cancer and it spread. Iv even googled the name of the gynecology oncologist. Xx

I think i should definitely stay away from google as iv even googled the name of the gynogoly oncologist which i shouldnt have done because I was unsure what his title ment untill now. He was also the one that did my colposcopy but then decided to do a biopsy well i was there because he said i have a large area of abnormalities and they need to go to the lab. Im sorry if i sound thick but do you normally get referred to a gynogolist when your biopsy results are back. Also after i had the biopsy done iv had nothing but pains in my lower back but i dont no if im just thinking to much into things. Xx

I think it's usual to be referred to a gynaecologist if you've had a biopsy taken. Even if - and it's likely - they have removed all the abnormal cells, or they were tested and found to be ok, because you got to this point they will want to keep an extra eye on things and might book you in for more regular smears. They will certainly want to explain clearly what was seen, taken, tested and it needs to be a fully qualified gynaecologist that does this and it needs to be face to face, so you can ask any questions you need to. If, and it's a big if, you do need further treatment it will be doable. Can you take someone with you to the appointment? Its natural to walk in to these appointments and then not take in much of what is said, even when it's good news. My gynaecologist was great and drew me diagrams and basic notes, so when I got home I could look back and get my head around what she'd said. Also, worth asking who you contact if you do have any further questions after the appointment - most gynae departments have specialist nurses who you can call to run questions by (I rang mine almost daily between colposcopy and results, poor nurse). The back pain is also quite normal. The biopsy will cause niggles and we have so many nerves in that area that aches and pains can spring up all over. There's also a psychological element and our brains play tricks, making pain we'd normally shrug off into a major crisis.
