Minor Viral Changes

I went for my first colposcopy last week after my smear test said borderline abnormal cells and HPV. I was told by the specialist it looks healthy, they were happy with it but to come back in a year, I imagine due to the HPV. Honestly, I felt like I was rushed out of there, like the doctor was late for his lunch. I was so relieved to not need treatment, not even a biopsy, I guess I didn’t think to ask.

I received my letter today. It says ‘Suggestive Minor Viral Changes’, what does this mean?

I didn’t have a biopsy and I was made to think it regressed and wasn’t even borderline. He said he saw nothing wrong. I am so heartbroken, I thought I was healthy as I had been made to think that. I was so shocked to get this letter saying I am not okay. I thought being sent back in a year was because of the HPV and was common, am I wrong? I am so heartbroken and feel like I was conned/lied to.

Hi @nuclearwinter

The check up will be because of the HPV not because of the viral changes, minor viral changes basically just means your cervix has the equivalent of a cold, the colposcopy found nothing suggestive of CIN/HPV changes so its likely your changes wernt caused by HPV despite being positive… cells change harmlessly on the cervix regularly this is why its called the transformation zone, our smears just look at how different they look from normal, borderline means slightly different… its very likely a viral change would also come back as borderline on a smear as it would make cells look slightly abnormal, they just wouldnt lead to CC

Its not that you have been lied too, they just havnt been very clear on their findings… the letters we get they arnt really designed with the us in mind they are just copies of the letter sent to our GPs, it would ease alot of our anxieties if we were sent our own letters with more of a breakdown or even just a little more information without the jargon xx
