Hpv

Is it possible to have a high risk hpv and have a normal smear? I am high risk hpv positive and been told that i should expect my smear to be abnormal becuase of this.

Hi

I think it is possible, but it's less likely. The HPV often causes some cell changes. They might not be severe enough to warrant any treatment though, so you may just be monitored.

If you do need treatment, it often kick-starts the body into fighting off the HPV, which is what happened in my case. My 6 month post-treatment smear was clear with no sign of HPV either.

Hope that helps!

Hi.

I was HPV positive (high risk) at first smear a little under 18 months ago but normal cells. Repeat 12 months later came back HPV again but not enough cells to test. 3 months later (3 weeks ago) came back HPV again (high risk each time) and normal cells. So I'm for a repeat smear in 12 months. I don't know at one point they intervene because my nurse told me at the 12 month repeat I would have treatment if it was positive again but this hasn't happened.
