HPV, no abnormal cells but weird symptoms

Hiya, I had my smear test in Nov 2020 and it came back saying high risk HPV but no abnormal cells. However since Oct 2020 I have been having symptoms of pain during sex (to the point I physically cannot even try), pain with and frequent urination (no UTIs or yeast infection), lower back pain consistently and I Ocasional severe pain and bleeding between periods (although because I am on the pill my periods can be a bit out of sync).

im really concerned and obviously dr google doesn't help at all, so just looking for some reassurance. I've been tested for STIs all of which came back negative and had an ultrasound but nothing was found.

GP advised doing nothing however I pushed back as cannot put up with the pain, and having symptoms for 6 months so now have a gynae appointment for a colposcopy in a months time.

I don't know if anyone has been through anything similar obviously my brain is assuming the worst... ?

Hi Serenastar,

Sorry to hear you are going through this! I have been going through similar for the past year. I had HPV and abnormal cells over a year ago, so I think it is very easy for the mind to link the two symptoms and fear the worst. I think it is definitely important to push to be seen, however, I wouldn't panic that this is cervical cancer related just because you have HPV. There are many other reasons you could be expereincing this. I personally have also had colposcopy, multiple ultrasound scans, swabs, and pelvic exams and still no reason for the symptoms that are very similar to yours. I have finally got a gynaecology referral but the wait will be a while due to COVID. Obviously, I am on this forum so I worry too, but I have to keep remind myself that they are doing tests to rule serious things out. I have been told now for me that it is very likely to be endometriosis but that is difficult to diagnose. Hopefully your colposcopy will put your mind at ease and I am glad it is soon!

Good luck!

February 2020 - symptoms of bleeding between periods, pelvic pain

March 2020 - smear, HPV and low grade changes

June 2020 - colposcopy, one biopsy taken, CIN1

Sernastar sorry to hear about what you are going through.  It sounds very much like me when I was younger and it turned out I had  endometrosis.   I would seek a referral to a specialist who can investigate it further as it could be so many things.

Thanks both for the reply, I hope it does end up being endometriosis (well I don't but you know what I mean). I have my colposcopy today and spotting so hopefully they will be able to do it, but I will keep you both updated.

the only thing that has changed now is I now have swelling in my lymph nodes in my groin! ?

thank you again xx

Hi Serenastar,

That's really interesting actually because I have had swollen lymph nodes in my groin for about 6 weeks now! I have an ultrasound in a couple weeks to get them checked out. I wonder if we have something similar!

Let me know how you get on with your appointments and I'll do the same! Hope you're doing okay xx

Hi all, went to my appointment nothing was visibly wrong with my cervix. I was told that I could have a laparoscopy but that would only be a 50/50 chance of something showing up or pay for relationship therapy.

I left the appointment incredibly upset and am now seeking to be referred to a specialist gynaecologist who deals with this issue (following the advice of the GUM clinic).

very please to know it is not cancer however very upset to have no diagnosis or any form of support!
