Trachelectomy, anyone else had one?

Hi everyone I’m 30 years old have no children was diagnosed with stage B1 cgin cervical cancer. It’s been decided with my consultant than I’m going to have a trachelectomy with lymph-node removal through key hole surgery, we have opted for this rather than a hysterectomy to try to preserve my fertility. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this procedure done and could give any advice on what to expect or the after effects. I’ve never had an operation before and the thought of being put to sleep is terrifying me let alone everything else. Any info at all would be massively helpful. Thank you xxx

Hi I had the same operation back in 2015 so feel free to ask me any questions.

I found it ok to deal with and I didn’t have any pain except for my stomach which I found out was from removal of the lymph nodes - it just felt like I had done 10000 sit ups!

I was in hospital for 4 days and then I had 6 weeks off work.

I have been fine ever since just sometimes get an achey back, I had an epidural for pain relief and suspect that had something to do with it.

Any questions just ask :) x

Aww thank you for your reply. Did you have this procedure done through key hole? I’m having a general anaesthetic I’ve got to have a catheter in as well I’m dreading the whole thing to be honest but if it’s gping to save my life then I feel so lucky and in the hope to keep my fertility as well will be a bonus. Just hope it works and they get clear margins of not I’ll be looking at a hysterectomy. Did you have to have any other treatment in terms of radio or chemo? X

No I didn’t need anything else and have been all clear ever since *touch wood*

yeah it was keyhole so I have 3 little scars on my tummy but you can only really notice one and then it looks like a mosquito bite haha

yeah i had the catheter as well it was ok

i was just very tired afterwards and my stomach bloated massively and just felt very heavy. I went in wearing jeans and stupidly thought I would come out in them but there was no way my stomach would have got back in them so pjs all the way!

It will be fine I have had a few ops under General anaesthetic and had the examination under anaesthetic beforehand as well it just made me tired. I was a bit nauseous and vomiting when I woke up but that is always how I react after being knocked out.

I am sure it won’t be half as bad as you think :)

Aww thank you so much for replying that been really helpful. Amazing news your all clear now feels like a million miles away for me at the moment but one step at a time. Yeah I’ve been warned about the bloatedness plenty of loose pjs and nighties for me haha. X

You will get there I am sure.

Yeah nighties are a must I didn’t take any just pjs and obviously couldn’t get any bottoms on for a few days and as a total prude I was mortified ha

Any other questions feel free to ask :)

Hello!

I had the same op as you in 2017 and am currently approaching two years clear (fingers and toes crossed). I wrote at length about the trachelectomy on a blog because a) I wanted to record my experiences and get it all off my chest and b) wanted to put it out in the universe in case someone found any of the information helpful.

It's here if you want to read:- https://atyourcervixuk.wordpress.com/blog/

Warning - there are incredibly poor attempts at humour.

I wrote a 'warts and all' approach to it even about the good ol' post operative pooing experience.

If you have any questions in particular (not just about pooing) then let me know! I'm happy and open to share my experiences.

Hi

I haven't had a trachelectomy but I've just had a radical hysterectomy and have come home with a catheter and it's not that bad! In fact Its nice not to have to get up in the night for a pee.

I like you was really worried about the anaesthetic but the anaesthetists look after you and really put you at ease. It wasn't scary at all, you just kind of drift off. I was never in any pain just a bit tender and very bloated.
