Hi everyone I had a colposcopy on the 6th of jan I rang earlier to see if my biopsy results are back and the receptionist told me they are but she can't tell me them and that they are getting sent out 2nd class and should be with me sometime next week! Is this normal? Does it mean there is something wrong that's why she cudnt tell me on the phone? Thanks x

I'm sure it doesn't mean anything in particular - perhaps she was new and wasn't sure if she should give them out, or perhaps she can't access them. If you're really worried then you could always try calling again tomorrow and ask if the GP can call you back with them? Try not to worry - easier said than done, but focus on the fact they're on their way and you'll have them soon. Fingers crossed it's good news!

Aug 2013 - turned 25, clear smear result

Jan 2015 - smear taken as part of routine 'full body' health check-up. Results show HPV 16 - high risk, and CIN 1 confirmed

Jan 2015 - colposcopy, CIN 2 confirmed, biopsy taken. Awaiting biopsy results

Hi Anxietygirl2

No, it doesn't mean that.  The vast majority will not give results over the phone whether they are good or bad.  The fact they are being sent out 2nd class does not indicate bad news.  I was phoned up and told the consultant wanted to see me and that was when I was told I had  CC.

Please try not to worry too much, the waiting is awful but hopefully you will get your results very soon.

Thanks for replying ladies...that does make sense Cheryl that 2nd class surely doesn't mean urgent I'm just a worrier and can't handle the unknown! The girl I spoke to did say she wasn't medically trained to give results as if I had any questions she couldn't answer them so maybe it's just the procedure....I should have stated my smear results were borderline with evidence of hpv...feel silly really considering brave women on this site have experienced much worse results xx

Cheryl is correct. Most places won't give out bad news on the phone because they don't know if you have anybody with you or even if you are sitting down.

Therefore they won't give out good news over the phone either because if they were to do that then anybody not being given results over the phone would know they were bad and we'd be back to square one.

Frequently second class post is just as fast as first class post only more expensive.

Be lucky

Thankyou Tivoli that does make sense I just hate the waiting and knowing they have my results and know what they are yet can't tell me I suppose I'm not the only person in this situation and will just have to wait like everyone else...xx

If your that anxious hun you can always ask the nurse from colposcopy to give you a ring.  Sometimes they are more likely to give results over the phone. Xxx

thankyou Nia42 :) I might try that if I can pluck up the courage my heart was pounding out my chest yesterday just speaking to the receptionist I really need to stop thinking the worst all the time xx

Hi Anxiety girl,

It is completely normal and I was exactly the same.

My consultants secretary was kind enough to read my letter out to me over the phone. That was last Friday and the letter finally came today (Weds) so yours should be with you really soon

Thankyou Suzysooz :)

the waiting is just awful isn't it...I havnt rang back thought I will just wait for my results in the post I don't want to annoy them even though the waiting is annoying me!!...they aren't in any rush mind are they honestly I got my smear results quicker!....does it mean the biopsy samples have been sat for weeks waiting to be looked at That's why it's taking so long? I thought they would have to be checked straight away xx

I think it depends on how busy the lab is. From my understanding, biopsies which are not marked as urgent usually take 10-14 days to come back from the lab minimum. The consutant then has to review them and decide on a course of action and dictate a letter. Depending on workload I think there can be delays either side. If the lab are really busy or short staffed (I think the results have to be checked and verified by more than 1 person and then reported) also my consultant specialised in oncology as well so probably is a pretty busy guy. Then of course you have to wait for the busy secretary to type the letter and send via the slowest method known to man - 2nd class via hospital mailroom! :-)

Is it any wonder we are sick with worry?!

I can see it both ways, the secretary is not trained to answer medical questions and probably does not enjoy weeping ladies calling her up and asking lots of questions. Even the 'good news' Letters are jargony and vague! Don't be worried about calling up and asking questions. The most important thing is that you feel reassured and have confidence in your medical team.

Apart from the serious lack of tea and biscuits I was really happy with my treatment. I wish things could of course speed up but I don't think I would have got much of a better/ quicker service if I had have gone private. It is very sad that this is not always the case for everyone.
