Radiation/ Brachytherapy opinions please

Hello, Im back ,I had the radicial hysterectomy and lymph node emoval 20th June, so far so good, been a lot better than I thought mobily wise - toilet wise not, but getting there just finished anotibiotics for bladder infection. I feel like everything has been put back in my tummy the wrong way  :-)

Have been given the "all clear" YAY Laughing but the oncoligists want to give me radiotheraphy for 5 days - for 5 weeks, then brachotheraphy - I think she said 4 treatments of that.

My dillema is

I am clear now - i know it is for a preventative, but my motto is "why fix it if it aint broke"

I was told 3/10 chance of coming back without treatment    one and half out 10    if I do --- thats seems very low

I worry about all the long term side effect (bowel/bladder)  I am 50 next month and I would rather quality of life for latter years

My legs have not swollen because of the lymph gland removal (yet) Im trying my best to keep from swelling, but read there is a good chance of it happening.

People I have spoke to and voiced my concerns have all said no dont have the treatment - but I am sure they are thinking about the sickness that comes while you are being treated (which I know I will get poorly) but its the long term I am thinking of

I know the decision is up to me but I was hoping I could get some opiions from you as I would like to have as much information as possible please

Thanks for reading

PS:  I forgot to add, I am having treatment at the Cancer Center at [name of hopsital removed],  I have had the most exceptional care and I know what they are doing s for my best interest.

Hi Sugar puff,

I too had a radical hysterectomy and got the all clear from my nodes. But they are also recommending prevetative radiation 5 weeks treatment. I feel the same. I'm also experience swelling in my legs from lymph fluid and annoyed that there was no spread to the nodes and now I'll probably get lymphodema, or already have it! I also know that radiation will make it worse! Unfortunately all treatment has side effects and I'm also worried about further damage to my bowel/bladder..

I don't know the answer, I guess it's a risk to not, -and that is your decision. For me, the fear of it returning and knowing that it can (as mine already did at a 1% chance) out weighs the risks :( ..even tho  I may end up with crappy life ailments as a result. I'm 42 have two children aged 13 & 7 and want to see them grow and be here for them so I'm doing it for them. But I totally understand what you mean. They also took my ovaries, which were perfectly in working order but the risk of it returning there was also enough to remove them.

Maybe a second opinion from another specialist might help you ?

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you the best outcome in every way.

Much love & hugs

Thankyou Krissi, that has made me think think now, when you say about the 1% chance and I was told 30% which would even be knocked down to one half if I do have treatment, if I could be sure of no long term damage then I would just have the treatent, with the operation I had to have that, but this is a bit different, but you have made me think now. I also have two children but a bit older 23, 26. Thankyou and I hope you are OK too   Chrissy xx

Hi there

i am a 1b1 Adenocarcinoma , diagnosed December 2013 I had a radical hysterectomy .  No spread anywhere else but my gynea consultant referred me to oncology for further treatment and I was asked to decide if I wanted chemo & radiotherapy as a preventative measure , I decided that I did however the oncologist eventually decided I "did not meet the criteria ",Sadly in 2015 my cancer returned to my left overary that meant more surgery and chemo radiotherapy for 5 weeks.

i have got through my treatment and so far there's no evidence of disease , I do wonder if I'd of had the chemo radiation after the first time round if my cancer would if come back ?? But who knows I feel quite angry about it sometimes , my recurrence to the ovary was apparently super rare only happens to 1% people .

i personally if I were you would have the treatment but you have to do what is right for you and I know it is a tough decision , I have a few ongoing bowel problems from the radiation and some slight right leg swelling but I feel well looked after by my hospital.  The side effects of the treatment are a small price to pay for being alive .

i just wanted to share my experience , I wish you all the best whatever you decide
