Pregnancy - possible biopsy needed at 31 weeks pregnant

Hello,

Hoping for a bit of advice.

I had a smear test early Jan 2022 which came back as positive for HPV and borderline abnormal cells so was made an appointment for a colposcopy. I found out I was pregnant the same day of this so a biopsy couldn’t be completed so the nurse told me to re book after my 20 week baby scan with a consultant.

Fast forward to last week, I had this this appointment the consultant and he ruled out cancer thankfully but has said that my CIN level is high grade and that he wants to see my at 31 weeks pregnant where he may do a biopsy. I’m also now classed as a high risk pregnancy as apparently I could bleed more when giving birth etc.

Couple of questions…

  • Do biopsies always bring on birth?
  • Can I decline the biopsy? Why can’t it be delayed until I’ve given birth?
  • Why am I now classed as high risk for my pregnancy? What can happen?
  • If the consultant said it isn’t cancer (by looking at it!) why would he want to do the biopsy before I’ve given birth?

Just looking for a bit of advice from anyone whose gone through this whilst pregnant.

Thank you,
Katherine

It’s your body so you can ask for the biopsy to be delayed until you have had your baby.
You don’t have to have any procedure you’re not happy with. Xxx
