HRT / Blood pressure - any suggestions?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advice about HRT and blood pressure if possible...

Does anyone know which types of HRT medications might be best for younger women? I'm only 29 and was 25 when I started HRT. I've been on Elleste solo tablets but my Blood Pressure has become very high in the last year and I now have to be on medicine for this too. Does anyone know whether different types are better for blood pressure? I would like to stop the Ramipril if possible really, particularly as this medicine can be related to leg cramps and leg weakness which I'm really suffering from. I ask because my GP's don't readily discuss it with me, and one said he hadn't heard of any other forms of HRT.......

Does anyone else have trouble with their average GP now? Every time I have a lymphodema flare up or HRT query it seems to flummox them because of my medical history. They don't seem to know how to help me. It's so difficult feeling alone with no specific, cancer related care after you've been discharged from your main consultant. Sorry to be moany and sound ungrateful about it all - I'm having some down times at the moment because I'm not sleeping with my leg / hip aches and pains!! I am very happy and grateful to be here of course! :)

Any advice VERY gratefully received!

P.S. Do you think they use metal clips in a hysterectomy? My dr said I can't have an MRI because of clips but what would they have done if they'd begun to suspect a recurrence? Thanks x

Hi Lucy,

GPs do not always know a lot about HRT or lymphodema as they are not experts.  But for your GP to say he does not know about other types of HRT  and to leave it like that is simply unacceptable.  You need to tell your GP to refer you to a menopause specialist so that they can work out the correct HRT for you.  If you have not done so already then you need to ask also to be referred to a lymphodema specialist to help you also manage this.

I've never heard with anyone being left with metal clips after a hysterectomy.  I'm having an MRI in January. My op was via keyhole so not sure if that makes a difference.  I'd double check this if I were you.

I hope you get it all sorted. Take care. Tess xx

Hi Tess, thanks for your reply. I think you're right I need to ask to see a specialist about my HRT - I'm being too wimpy - I hate going to the doctor now after all this and tend to just go along with what they say a bit too much so I can get out of there! I'll ask them as I'm going in to GP on Wednesday. I've got a lymphodema specialist but she said she didn't need to see me for a year because I'd started to manage better. I felt like I couldn't say that it's too long...

I've got a massive big scar so I think my operation was definitely not key hole lol! It was radical and they had to take out lymph nodes and surrounding tissue. I had an xray a few months ago and the results remarked on my surgical clips.

Sorry I sound like I can't be bothered doing anything for myself I let myself get down for a couple of years after my treatment and "let things happen to me" I have felt like I had no control over proceedings for a long time now. It feels like such a fight to get adequate medical care after this kind of diagnosis!

I've only decided in the last few months to take control back and look after myself better... at least I'm trying to do what I can do then....

Thanks for your advice and for reading it's helping me cope talking to other people and knowing I'm not the only one.

P.S have you ever suffered with sciatica / hip and back pain since your treatment? A few things I've read said that it can be radiotherapy damage

Hi Lucy,

Sorry for the late reply, I've not checked in for a while.  Did you manage to get anything sorted with your HRT and Lymphoedema?

I dont have any hip aches or Sciatica so I can't help you there, sorry.  My treatment stopped at the Radical Hyst and Lymph Node removal.  Are you still under your consultant?  Would he/she be able to help with the issues you are having rather than you having to go through your GP?

I hope you got some help and wishing you great things for 2014.  Take care, Tess xxx
