Has anyone put in an insurance claim?

Sorry to bring this one up but with the cost that I am going to face if this disease goes to the next step, I just want to make sure that my family aren't going to suffer financially. During conversations with friends they are adamant I should claim on mortgage critical cover so my husband rang yesterday for the forms. I hear that many cases of breast cancer and prostate cancer aren't covered but if is invasive cervical cancer, it is??

i have looked at some old threads but they are 2009 and before so I was wandering if anyone has recently made a claim.

Again, I'm sorry if this sounds insensitive but just trying to be practical before my op... Dons x

Hi Dons

Yes, I have just received the payout from our critical illness insurance. It usually tells you on your policy paperwork what they cover, but they told us over the phone when we rang for the forms that we would be covered. In my case it was just a case of providing the Consultants and GP details and waiting for them to send off their reports. Literally the day after the GP returned their paperwork we got confirmation of the payout and it came through about a week later - it was so much simpler than I was expecting. I also had the option to look at the medical reports before they were sent off - which I asked to do. This meant I got to see all the reports about me from first smear to treatment decision - maybe too much info for some, but it confirmed to me that I'd made the right decision to have a rad hyst rather than a trachelectomy.

It may sound a bit odd, but for me it also sort of softened the blow of the op to some extent, as deciding how to spend the money has given me something else to think about during my recovery.

All the best.x

Hey. I had critical illness insurance and claimed really thinking it would be rejected as these policy's have had some bad press. I filled in a few forms consenting that they could access my medical records and I also attached a copy of the letter from my consultant confirming my diagnosis with staging etc.  I did this to speed up the process.  They then wrote to my consultant to confirm the letter was genuine and then they paid out.  It only took about 3 weeks if that. So pleasantly surprised. My policy is now cancelled so I do need to check what I need to do about insurance going forward.  I think it will be very expensive!  I hope that helps xx

Hi, I was diagnosed in July and lots of people had said to me about criticall ilness cover. I luckily took this out with my mortgage but had been thinking that they wouldn't pay out. I read these messages last night which prompted me to get in touch with my company regarding my cover. I have just come off the phone to them & they said they do pay out for CC-whooo!. They are sending me a claim form & said they will be writing to my consultant- which is fine. What kind of information do they ask the consultant, is it just the grading and staging? Or more about expected recovery time?

I was 25 when I took out the cover and was a bit clueless about it all but thought it was a good thing to have & so did the advisor selling it to me!! What will they actually pay out for??? Is it mortgage payments for the time that I'm not working or have I got completely the wrong idea? I'm 31 & still clueless about it all- I guess I took it out just incase but also in hope that I would never need it & therefore thought i'd never need to understand it!!

Can anyone shed anymore light on it? Thanks x

Hi ELH7,

I'm not 100% sure what information the insurance company ask.  What I do know is that they asked my consultant if the diagnosis letter she sent to me was from her.  The consultant wrote back and said the letter was genuine and the diagnosis correct.  The diagnosis confirmed the tumour type, stage and grade.  This was all copied in on a letter the consultant copied me in on.  I do not know if they asked additonal questions.  If you have  invasive cervical cancer (as we had) then hopefully they will pay out.  But you will need to check your individual policy.  The forms you have to fill out are pretty simple and ask for your GP or consultant details.  How quick you get paid out depends on how quickly your doctor responds.

The policy should cover you for the amount of money on your entire mortgage (not just for when you have had time off work).  The amount could be the whole amount you borrowed at the start of your mortgage or you may have a decreasing term which means you will be paid the amount outstanding on your mortgage when you claim.  Either way, you could receive more than you owe on your mortgage or the amount you owe.  You do not have to pay off your mortgage with the money.  You can do what you like with it.

I do hope you can claim.  It such peace of mind for the future.  I thought of cancelling my policy many times, as like you I never thought I'd need it.  I just never got round to cancelling it.  Thank goodness! xx

In my case it was the amount remaining outstanding on the mortage if we'd made full repayments (we have only paid interest), so the amount is less than we owe, but still a substantial amount. The decision is then whether to use it to pay off the mortgage (incase the cancer returns at some point and you are unable to return to work) or whether to spend it otherwise. We were also pleasantly surprised that they added interest to the claim from the date of diagnosis until it was paid out, so we also got a bit more than they'd originally calculated.

As for what the Insurance company asked for - as I asked to see the report sent by the GP, I know it included all the letters between the hospital and GP, all smear, colposcopy, biopsy results and treatment plan. We were a bit sneaky and took photos off it all on my husbands phone, so we had it for our records if there was any dispute!

Thanks for your responses. This is all sounding quite positive. When I rang and spoke to the company today about my claim they said they do pay out for CC, I am hopeful but also trying not to get too over excited about it!!!

Thanks for the tip of asking for a copy of the reports- or even taking pictures! I'm seeing my consultant for a follow up appointment next Monday 23.09.13- I'll ask him to send me a copy of the resport when he does it

xx

I wasn't sure that I would qualify for my policy but made an enquiry anyway.

I was with Legal & General and took the policy out in 2006

I was diagnosed with a Stage 1a adenocarcinoma and had LLETZ then hysterectomy. No chemo/radio

L&G write to the consultant to ask for the histology report. It will not pay on Carcinoma-in-situ and will only pay on invasive cancer. It doesn't define invasive in the policy.

I just got the confirmation letter that says my policy will pay out in full!!!

One bright side to my last 7 months is now I have no more cancer and no more mortgage!!
