Cells seen protruding from cervix during routine smear

Hi, I've never used a forum for anything before, but I'm a bit worried and wondered if anyone had had similar stories... I had my routine smear test today and the nurse had to get a senior nurse in to look due to seeing 'cells protruding' from my cervix. They took the smear test, which will take 7 - 10 days for results and also took a photograph to make a referal with a gynocologist.

I'm really not sure what to make of it, panic stations one minute, to it can't be anything too serious the next - the only symptom I can scrap is an increase in normal discharge.

Any stories or info wouldbe greatly appreciated, I'm not very good at waiting!

Thanks

It sounds as though she has seen something potentially suspicious so has made the urgent referral.

You're bound to panic but I did read that 90% of people referred this way don't have cancer. The good thing is that you will be seen quickly.

My nurse fast-tracked me too and asked a doctor to come in and look at my cervix whilst the speculum was in to see what she thought and they both agreed it didn't look right and I needed the referral. However it turned out to be an ectropion. Which are normal and aren't related to cervical cancer.

You should have your appointment fairly soon xx

Thank you so much for your reply, you've helped put my racing mind to rest a good bit.

Thank you and I hope your results come back good.

Thank you! I hope that yours do too. It's such a worrying time isn't it. Whilst my smear results weren't terrible I'm in such a state waiting for the biopsy results. Hopefully they'll be all good too xx
