How do I join the forum?

  • Click the pink ‘sign up’ in the top right of your screen

  • Fill in the form that pops up, including choosing your public username (please see forum guidelines on what not to include in your username)

  • Click the pink ‘create your account’ icon

  • You will be sent an email to activate your account. If you don’t receive it, check your spam folder, or contact support@jostrust.org.uk.

  • Click the link in the email. You will be taken back to the Forum.

  • Click the pink ‘activate your account’ button

  • You will then be taken to the forum where you can chat to others, update your profile and email preferences if you wish to

What should my username be?

Your username is how other members of the forum will identify you. To avoid upset and confusion within the community please select a username that is not offensive or inappropriate.

Your username is public, for your protection we ask that you do not use your full name or any other personal information which could be used to identify you outside of the forum.

Please do not use names that refer to your profession for example nurse, doctor, etc.

To be mindful towards other users, your username should not contain any references to children or words that include “mum”. Some members of this community may be grieving the loss of their fertility.

How do I log in to the forum?

To log into the forum please follow the steps outlined below:

  • Click the blue ‘log in’ button in the top right of your screen
  • Enter your email address or username, and your password
  • Click the pink ‘log in’ button

Once you are logged you, you will see either your own profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of the screen. If you are logged out, you will see links to log in or sign up.

How do I get started?

Once you have joined the forum we suggest taking the time to update your profile and read through some of the existing posts.

When you are ready to start talking to others in the community, there are three ways you can do this:

Please be aware that topics and posts can be seen by everyone, but private messages can only be seen by the person you are sending them to.

How do I find my profile?

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen

  • Click on the grey person symbol in the drop-down menu

  • From there please choose which specific area of your profile you’d like to visit. These include:

    • Summary – a brief overview of your account
    • Activity – shows any posts and topics you have made
    • Drafts – where any unfinished / not submitted posts and topics you have created are saved
    • Preferences – update your username, profile picture, notification and email preferences
    • Log out – please use this option to log out of your account

How do I change my password?

There are two ways you can change your password:

Option 1:

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Click on the grey person symbol in the drop-down menu
  • Click the ‘preferences’ option
  • Click on ‘security’ that appears in the list on the left of your screen
  • Click the pink ‘send password reset email’ button
  • You will then receive an email with a link to reset your password. Please check your spam inbox if you haven’t received it
  • Click the link in the email and enter the new password you’d like to use.

Option 2:

  • If you’re not logged in, click the ‘Log in’ button
  • Click the ‘I forgot my password’ link
  • You will then receive an email with a link to reset your password. Please check your spam inbox if you haven’t received it
  • Click the link in the email and enter the new password you’d like to use.

How do I change my profile picture?

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Click on the person symbol in the drop-down menu
  • Click the ‘preferences’ option
  • Click on ‘account’ that appears in the list on the left of your screen
  • Click the pink pencil symbol under where it says ‘profile picture’
  • Choose the option add custom picture
  • Click the pink ‘upload picture’ button
  • A box will pop up showing you files on your computer. Navigate to where your photo is saved
  • Click on your chosen photo and click the ‘open’ button. Your picture will be uploaded.
  • Click the pink ‘save changes’ button

Out of courtesy for members grieving the loss of their fertility please refrain from choosing a profile picture which includes children.

Where can I add information about myself?

If you would like to include information about yourself or experience on your profile, you can add this to the ‘about me’ section.

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Click on the grey person symbol in the drop-down menu
  • Click the ‘preferences’ option
  • Click on ‘profile’ that appears in the list on the left of your screen
  • Fill in the ‘About me’ box
  • Click the pink ‘save changes’ button at the bottom of the page

What should I include in the about me section?

Please use this space to tell other forum members more information about yourself and your experiences.

When choosing what to write in your ‘about me’ section, for your protection, please do not include contact information: email address, web address, telephone number or postal address. As forum posts can appear in internet searches too (e.g. if cervical cancer or screening are entered into the search engine) we feel it is better for our users to remain anonymous. For similar reasons, we also ask you to refrain from naming your hospital or healthcare professionals.

How do I change my email preferences?

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Click on the grey person symbol in the drop-down menu
  • Click the ‘preferences’ option
  • To change your email preferences click on ‘emails’ that appears in the list on the left of your screen and change your settings as required
  • Click the pink ‘save changes’ button at the bottom of the page

How do I change my notification preferences?

Notifications are updates you receive when you’re logged in to the Forum. For example, to let you know about a new post in a topic you’re interested in.

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Click on the grey person symbol in the drop-down menu
  • Click the ‘preferences’ option
  • To change your notification preferences, click on ‘notifications’ that appears in the list on the left of your screen and change your settings as required.
  • Click the pink ‘save changes’ button at the bottom of the page

What information will other forum users see from my profile?

Other users will be able to see your profile summary, recent activity and information you include in the about me section of your profile. They will not be able to see your full name or email.

How can I prevent other forum users from sending me private messages?

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Click on the grey person symbol in the drop-down menu
  • Click the ‘preferences’ option
  • Click on ‘notifications’ that appears in the list on the left of your screen
  • Make sure ‘Allow other users to send me personal messages’ is unticked
  • Click the pink ‘save changes’ button at the bottom of the page

You can also only allow specific users to message you. To do this click ‘users’ that appears in the list on the left of your screen.

  • Make sure ‘Only allow specific users to send me personal messages’ is ticked
  • Start typing the username of the user you want to add. When it appears below, click on the user name. You can add multiple usernames here.
  • Click the pink ‘save changes’ button at the bottom of the page

Creating posts/conversations and talking to others on the forum

How do I create a new topic?

You can only create a new topic if you are logged in to the forum. ( If you do not have an account, you can sign up here and click on the pink sign up button at the top of the page ).

To create a new topic, please follow the steps below:

  • Visit the Forum homepage
  • Click the pink ‘+new topic’ button above the list of categories on the right hand side of the page
  • A pop up will appear, with text boxes for you to write your post.
  • In the field labelled ‘what is this discussion about in one brief sentence’, please write a short title that sums up what your post is about
  • Please then choose a category from the drop-down menu. If you are already in a category this will already be selected for you.
  • In the large text box, where it says ‘type your full post here’, write your main message. It can be as long as you like.
  • When you are ready, click the pink ‘+create topic’ button underneath your message. Your post will be published.

Please note if you are posting for the first time, it will need to be approved by a member of staff before being published. This is to prevent any spams or illegitimate posts being published.

How do I post a reply to an existing topic?

You can only reply to an existing topic if you are logged in to the forum. ( If you do not have an account, you can sign up here and click on the pink sign up button at the top of the page ).

To reply to an existing topic, please follow the steps below:

  • Visit the Forum homepage and choose one of the following options:
    • Browse specific categories to find posts you are interested in
    • Click on the latest posts icon
  • If you see a topic title that you would like to read more of, click on the title
  • You will be taken to the bottom of conversation thread. Topics are made up of a first post and any number of replies, please use your cursor to scroll through each of the posts.
  • If you would like to reply, click either the grey reply button under the post or the pink ‘reply’ button near the bottom of the page
  • A text box will pop up. Type your reply here.
  • When you have finished, please click the pink ‘reply’ button underneath your message. Your reply will be published.
  • You can also click the reply icon below a specific post in a topic

How do I edit my post?

You can edit your post for 60 minutes after saving and publishing it. After this, you will not be able to edit. This time limit is in place to avoid any confusion if other users have already replied to the post.

If your post was published within the past 60 minutes:

  • Click the grey pencil symbol underneath your post
  • A text box will pop up with the contents of your post. Edit the text in the box.
  • Click the pink ‘save edit’ button under your post.
  • Your edits will then be published.

You can make as many edits as you would like within 60 minutes of your original post. If your post was published more than 60 minutes ago and you would still like to change it, please email support@jostrust.or.uk and one of the team will be able to help you with this.

How do I see my private messages?

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Click on the envelope symbol in the drop-down menu

How do I send a private message?

There are a couple of ways you can send another forum member a private message:

  • Click on your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of your screen
  • Double click on the grey envelope symbol in the drop-down menu
  • You will be taken to your private message inbox
  • Click the pink ‘new message’ button
  • A text box will pop up. In the field where it says ‘add a user’, please start typing the name of the person you’d like to message.
    • This will pull a list of forum users to choose from. Select their name when it comes up in the drop-down list.
  • Underneath the name field please fill in the subject line – this is a brief sentence of what the message it about
  • Write your message in the main text box and then click on the pink ‘message’ button with the envelope underneath your message to send

OR

  • Click on another user’s username or profile picture anywhere on the site
  • A box will pop up with their profile information. Click on the pink ‘private message’ button with an envelope in that box
  • A text box will appear, where you can add your message and subject
  • Click on the pink ‘message’ button with the envelope underneath your message to send

How do I know if someone has replied to my post?

You will receive a notification when someone has replied to your post. This can be displayed in a couple of ways.

Firstly notifications will display as a green/blue circle with a number inside, which appear next to your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of the forum.

You also have the option to turn on email notifications. You can be alerted when someone replies to your post or sends you a private message. Please see how to update my notification settings for more information.

Can I get a notification when someone replies to my topic/post?

Yes, you will receive notifications when:

  • Someone has replied to a topic you have started
  • Someone has commented on a conversation you have previously posted in
  • Someone has sent you a private message
  • Someone has liked one of your posts
  • Someone has tagged you in a post.

The notifications are a green/blue circle with a number inside, which appear next to your profile picture/initials/avatar in the top right of the site. You also have the option to turn on email notifications, to be alerted when someone replies to your post or sends you a private message. What do I do when I get an email notification?

An email notification will alert you to someone replying to your post or sending you a private message. To view the content of these messages, you will need to log in to the forum.

To view the post on the Forum click the blue box in the email that says ‘visit topic’.

You will be taken to the relevant post on the forum. You can then choose how to respond, for example you can reply or like the post

How do I tag another forum user into my post?

To tag another user in a post type ‘@’ then start typing the username of the user you want to tag. When it appears click on the username.

How do I ‘like’ a post?

You may come across a really helpful and supportive post that you would prefer to show your appreciation of instead of writing a response. In these situations you can ‘like’ a post instead. To do this, please click the heart symbol under the post.

Can I upload pictures on to my post?

In order protect our forum users and prevent spam, you are unable to post images or videos in posts or comments.

When you are writing your post or topic, please highlight the text that you would like to make into a link

  • Click the chain link symbol in the bar at the top of the compose box.

  • How do i add a link

  • Paste the link you would like to add into the box that pops up

  • Click the pink ‘OK’ button

You can also copy and paste the link directly into the post/topic or write it in full.

I am worried that another forum user may be at risk, what can I do?

If you are worried that another forum user may be at risk please let the support team know privately by either:

  • Clicking the flag button under the post and selecting ‘something else’. You can then enter the reason why you have flagged the post.
  • Emailing support@jostrust.org.uk.
  • Contact one of our Moderators on the ‘About’ page. To privately message a moderator, click on their profile, then click the ‘Private Message’ button.

We will do our best to make sure that they get further support if needed.

Navigating the forum

How do I find posts and conversations that are relevant to me?

Every conversation on the Forum has a category, to help you narrow down your search. This allows our community to find conversations with similar experiences to their own. There are a few ways you can look for posts in a specific category. Please follow one of these steps:

  • Visit the Forum homepage, this page automatically is set up to list all of our forum categories for you to choose from. Please take the time to read through each description.
  • Once you have found the area you would like to read or submit a post in, please click on the category you wish to view.

What is meant by the tab latest?

This is where you can filter your view by all the latest posts on the forum. Latest topics are ones that have been posted most recently.

Moderating the forum

How can I contact the forum moderators?

You can see who our Moderators are on the ‘About’ page. To privately message a moderator, click on their profile, then click the ‘Private Message’ button.

You can also contact our team by emailing support@jostrust.org.uk.

How do I report inappropriate or spam posts?

You can flag posts for being:

  • Off-topic - not relevant to the current discussion as defined by the title and first post, and should probably be moved elsewhere
  • Inappropriate - contains content that someone may consider offensive, abusive, or a violation of our community guidelines
  • Spam - post is an advertisement, or vandalism. It is not useful or relevant to the current topic.
  • Something else – requires attention from staff for a reason not listed above

To flag a post, click the flag symbol below the post. Choose the reason you are flagging the post, then click the ‘Flag post’ button.

I no longer want to have an account on the forum, how can I delete it?

Please email support@jostrust.org and one of the team will be able to delete your account for you.
